HOA Issues Violation Notice to Red Rock Formation for "Unapproved Exterior Color"

ST. GEORGE, UT

ST. GEORGE, UT — A homeowners association in southern Utah has issued a formal violation notice to a 200-million-year-old sandstone formation, citing its "persistent and unapproved" shade of red.

The notice, taped to the base of the cliff Tuesday morning, gives the formation 30 days to repaint in one of the community's three approved colors: Desert Beige, Sandy Beige, or Beige.

"We have standards," said Gloria Pennwhistle, the association's architectural review chair, who confirmed the formation never submitted a color request form. "Everyone else in this neighborhood follows the rules. This thing just shows up glowing orange at sunset like it owns the place."

The violation also cites "excessive height," "unpermitted erosion," and "attracting visitors who park on the street."

Geologists noted the formation predates the HOA by roughly 199,999,970 years. The board said that is "not a valid excuse" and that the grandfather clause applies only to structures built after 1994.

At press time, the formation had not responded, which board members are treating as a second violation for failure to communicate.
